Ox Co-op

OxCo-op is a way of communally bulk-buying socially and environmentally sustainable food. Working together, we have the power and capital to have much more of a say in where our food comes from and which ethical standards it must reach. By choosing to buy directly from ethical wholesalers and local producers, we build a feasible alternative to chain supermarkets.

The Wonder Dialogues: rewilding the novel with Gregory Norminton

The Wonder Dialogues: rewilding the novel with Gregory Norminton

We live in times of ecological degradation and a high risk of dangerous or catastrophic climate change. What to do? Some find a part of the answer in rewilding: the deliberate restoration of spaces for non-human life and ecosystem function. But imagining change is hard. What role is there for artists and writers, notably novelists? The inclusion of The Overstory by Richard Powers on the 2018 Man Booker shortlist shows that fiction with a strong environmental theme can command attention. But how far does this go? Can novels with an agenda really be good novels? Join us to discuss these and other questions at the ninth of The Wonder Dialogues.

Gregory Norminton is the author of five novels and two collections of short stories. His latest novel, The Devil's Highway, has been described by George Monbiot as ‘powerful, essential’ and by Robert Macfarlane as ‘brilliant.’ He teaches creative writing at Manchester Metropolitan University. His short introduction to what he calls 'rewilding the novel' is here: https://dark-mountain.net/rewilding-the-novel/

Caspar Henderson is a writer and convenor of The Wonder Dialogues, in which he talks with extraordinary people about amazing things. His is the author of A New Map of Wonders and The Book of Barely Imagined Beings.

The Dialogue takes place from 7.30-9.00pm, on Monday 29 October in the Library of the Oxford Hub, upstairs from the Turl Street Kitchen, 16-17 Turl St, Oxford OX1 3DH. It’s free but please make a small donation to help support future talks in the series. For more information see here: http://www.anewmapofwonders.com/p/the-wonder-dialogues.html
